Leylah

Violet-colored eyes gaze across the endless desert sand.
She paints pictures with her voice, writes poems upon the wall.
Leila longs to live in peace, between stone and palm leaves,
surrounded by olive trees, with no borders in her town.

She loves to dance barefoot, with a drum held in her hand,
but one day her silk veil is carried by a storm wind into the sand.
Driven away, she feels the longing to touch the sky,
to feel the warm rain upon her naked skin.

Leylah dreams of freedom,
like the morning star awakened in the sky.
She holds the girl with love in her arms,
sings a song of the homeland from which she came.

Leylah dreams of freedom,
and therefore never gives up hope.
She takes the desert sand into her hand,
wishing for the sky above a peaceful land.

Oriental jewelry calls to her, with sapphires and gold.
But she listens to her heart,
which has always wanted something more.
Love drives Leylah onward;
she wants respect from the man
who carries her through the waves of time as though she were precious.

She sees a sea of stars in an unknown land.
Her tears shimmer golden in the moonlight
and gently fall upon the shore.

The Queen of the Night sways her hips to the rhythm,
the Eye of Fatima has brought good fortune.

Leylah dreams of freedom,
like the morning star awakened in the sky.
She holds the girl with love in her arms,
sings a song of the homeland from which she came.

Leylah dreams of freedom,
and therefore never gives up her faith.
She takes the desert sand into her hand,
wishing for the sky above a peaceful land.

Leylah, you dream of freedom.
I see your image from a time long gone.
Your memories are woven into mine,
you have built a bridge toward the future.
